Small Engraving Of The Arms Of Jean-henri Dollfus, Probable Bookplate, 18th Century Coat Of Arms
Small engraving with the coat of arms of Jean-Henri Dollfus (1731-1804), a member of the great Dollfus family, which distinguished itself in the manufacture of Mulhouse's famous printed fabrics (indiennes) and whose several members held important positions in the city's governance in the XVIIIth and XIXth centuries.
He defended his medical thesis in Basel in 1750 (hence the "Joh[annes] Henri[cus] Med. Dr") and was knighted by the Duke of Schleswig-Holstein in 1776.
The arms, in the rocaille taste with these shell motifs, feature the emblematic "pied", onomastic play on DollFUSS, foot in German.
Jean-Henri, a bibliophile, built up a rich library, from which this small engraving is certainly taken, since it must have been an ex-libris.
Framed under glass in a small blackened wooden rod, with all the charm of simplicity.
Some foxing documented in the photographs.
