Franz De Merlier, 1878–1974, was a painter, draftsman, and watercolorist born in Ghent, Belgium, who later became a naturalized American citizen. He studied at the academies in Bruges, Ghent, and Brussels, where he won awards in 1894 and 1895. In 1910, he left Belgium for the United States, where he set up his studio in Pennsylvania and became a member of the Brandywine artists’ colony. He created numerous murals for theaters and hotels. He died in Philadelphia in 1974. The artist is listed in Bénézit, Artprice, Artnet, etc.
