Willy Lateste, 1930-1967, Belgian painter, comic strip artist, cartoon creator, animator and scriptwriter born in Ostend. In the 1950s, he produced historical comics for the Flemish magazine Ons Volkske. In the mid-1960s, he joined the Belvision studios in Brussels, founded by Raymond Leblanc, publisher of the popular Tintin newspaper. He took part in the animated shorts and the first film launched by the studios, Pinocchio in Space (1965). To promote the film, Lateste was commissioned to adapt it into a comic strip, published in Tintin from March to May 1965, then published as an album by Le Lombard and Dargaud. He also did the illustrations for the Chocolat Jacques advertising album, for which he was not credited. Still with Belvision, Willy Lateste directed short films for the Oumpah-Pah series (1965). He wrote the screenplays for Asterix the Gaul (1967) and Asterix and Cleopatra (1968), the latter alongside the original authors René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo. He died prematurely on June 7, 1967, during the latter's production, at the age of 36. Artist listed in the Piron (Dictionary of Belgian Painters).
