Marcel Stobbaerts, 1899–1979, Belgian painter of portraits, nudes, scenes of everyday life, and cityscapes. Illustrator, watercolorist, pastel artist, and engraver. The grandson of Jan Stobbaerts, he studied under Constant Montald at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels (1915–1918). He then worked in Paris for several years, where he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants. He won the Prix de la Jeune Peinture Belge in 1924. Member of the Orientations and Apports art groups. Between 1920 and 1928, his work was influenced by Expressionism and Futurism; he later evolved toward an intimist style characterized by a sober brushwork and controlled tones. His narrative art, at times caricatural and ironic, depicts scenes of everyday life: beaches, fairs, cabarets, etc. He was a close friend of Hergé, the creator of Tintin, and is in fact depicted in *King Ottokar’s Sceptre*, page 59, panel 6, on the left, as the black-haired officer with a hooked nose holding his shako in his right hand. Works are held in museums in Antwerp and Brussels. The artist is listed in *Bénézit*, *Arto*, and *Piron*. Listed on Artprice, Artnet, Akoun, etc...
