Bronze Deity. Southeast Asia. 19th Century Or Earlier.
This small deity is depicted seated on a pedestal formed of lotus petals. A serpent serving as her sash winds around her lower back, then slips between her torso and left arm, raising its head to shoulder height. A swollen protrusion beneath the belt is likely the belt’s knot, though it is possible that it is a phallus. The crown is unusually elaborate and suggests a statuette from Southeast Asia, perhaps Indonesia. Lost-wax casting, with a few casting imperfections; beautiful antique patina. Work from the 19th century or earlier. Height: 103 mm.
