A monumental historical work of museum quality, created by the renowned German-Russian history painter and academician of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts, Georg Johann Christian von Urlaub (1845–1914).

Subject and Historical Significance

This large-scale painting masterfully recreates one of the most dramatic and iconic chapters of Russia’s modernization reforms: the forced shaving of traditional beards and the cutting up of long, traditional garments, imposed by decrees of Tsar Peter the Great in 1698 and 1705.

The action takes place in a winter landscape at the gates of a fortress, where the tsar’s soldiers are enforcing the new law. Von Urlaub brilliantly captures the psychological intensity of the scene: the unyielding determination of the imperial forces contrasted with the personal tragedy of the boyars and citizens, whose centuries-old way of life is brutally shattered.

Provenance and Publications

This work holds a well-documented place in art history. It was published as a reproduction in the famous pre-revolutionary illustrated art magazine “Sever ” (The North, No. 4, 1893) under its official title.

Georg von Urlaub’s historical compositions on the theme of Peter the Great’s reforms are extremely rare on the private market. His major works are housed in the largest state museums, notably the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow and the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg.
