Kodansu Studio – Hakone Marquetry & Matsuyama Bronzes – Meiji Period

Description:
A rare Kodansu-style table cabinet of museum quality, crafted during the Meiji period for the European luxury market. Behind its two hinged doors lies an asymmetrical arrangement of seven drawers. This work of art masterfully combines two great Japanese crafts: precious wood marquetry from Hakone (Yosegi-zaiku) and chiseled metalwork from the Matsuyama workshops.

The doors, drawer fronts, and top surface are adorned with superb high-relief inlays of gilded bronze and mixed metals (depicting birds, flowers, butterflies, and a scarab beetle). The upper metal medallion bears the authentic signature, hand-chiseled by Master Matsuyama.
