Pair Of Portraits By Leopold Fertbauer (1802–1875)

Artist: Leopold Fertbauer

Portrait of a Lady in a Red Shawl
Portrait of a Gentleman (circa 1830)

These two works were conceived as a pair of portraits. The gentleman and the lady are depicted in elegant attire characteristic of Viennese Biedermeier fashion. Each portrait is painted in oil on wood panel and measures 25 × 19.3 cm.

Together, they form a classic pair of family portraits, characteristic of Austrian portrait painting from the first third of the 19th century.

Leopold Fertbauer was a renowned Austrian painter, considered a master of intimate portraiture and one of the leading figures of the Viennese School. His work is distinguished by the subtlety of his psychological analysis, his highly precise draftsmanship, and his meticulous attention to detail. In addition to his artistic career, Fertbauer served as curator of the Liechtenstein Princely House’s Painting Gallery, a testament to the high esteem in which he was held within Viennese artistic circles.

Both portraits are in excellent condition.
