Antique Paris 1900 Exposition Universelle Photo Album – 72 Original Photographs

A remarkable original photographic album documenting the Exposition Universelle held in Paris in 1900.

The album contains 72 contemporary photographs, arranged four to a page, forming an extensive and fascinating visual record of the great Paris World's Fair at the height of the Belle Époque.

The photographs include numerous views of the Eiffel Tower and Champ-de-Mars, together with the spectacular temporary palaces and exhibition buildings, national pavilions, monumental entrances, fountains, bridges, the Seine and the enormous exhibition grounds.

Among the identifiable subjects are the Palais de l'Électricité and Château d'Eau, the Rue des Nations with its extraordinary succession of national pavilions, and views associated with the exhibition's innovative transport installations and celebrated trottoir roulant or moving walkway.

There are particularly attractive panoramic and elevated views across the exhibition, including several incorporating the Eiffel Tower. The tower had originally been constructed for the Exposition Universelle of 1889 and remained one of the dominant landmarks of the considerably larger 1900 exhibition.

The photographs are anonymous and bear no photographer's name, printed titles or negative numbers. They appear to constitute a privately assembled contemporary photographic record rather than a conventional captioned souvenir album.

All 72 photographs remain mounted within their original decorative folding album, with attractive coloured borders to the pages. The exterior has a particularly decorative period cover with applied metal ornament and its original clasp.
