Antique French Portrait Miniature On Ivory, Veiled Lady, Empire Period, Circa 1810
An exquisite antique French portrait miniature, painted on ivory and dating from the Empire period, circa 1805–1815.
It depicts an elegant young woman wearing a delicate translucent white veil, her hair arranged in fashionable curls across her forehead. The restrained palette and delicately stippled modelling of the face are characteristic of French miniature painting of the early 19th century.
The miniature is preserved behind glass within a finely chased gilt-brass mount and its original ebonised wooden frame.
The presence of the glass made it particularly difficult to photograph and focus upon the miniature correctly. The photographs really do not do this exquisite little portrait justice.
