Antique Italian Cantagalli Florence Maiolica Life-size Bust Of A Renaissance Lady, C19th

An impressive and unusually large Antique Italian Cantagalli Florence Renaissance Revival maiolica bust of a Renaissance lady, dating to the 19th century.

Produced by the celebrated Cantagalli workshop of Florence, renowned for its revival of Italian Renaissance ceramic techniques and designs during the second half of the nineteenth century.

The bust depicts a noble Renaissance lady wearing a decorative headdress and richly ornamented bodice with scrolling foliate decoration, a style closely inspired by Florentine Renaissance sculpture. The beautifully modelled face contrasts with the colourful glazed decoration of the costume, a characteristic feature of Cantagalli’s Renaissance revival production.

This is an exceptionally large and heavy example, life-size, suggesting it may have been created as a special display or exhibition piece rather than a standard production model.

Such large Cantagalli sculptural pieces are far less commonly encountered than the smaller busts usually found on the market.

Condition: Good condition. No chips, cracks or restoration noted. There are small areas of glaze loss to the nose, upper lip and on the sleeve, visible in the photographs. A competent professional restorer could sympathetically repair these minor losses if desired.
