Engraving By Daniel Charles Marie Mordant, After Albert Edelfelt. Portrait Of A Young Woman

A very beautiful engraving depicting a portrait of an elegant young woman, seen in profile and seated on a chair outdoors; the woman depicted is Virginie, a Parisian model who shared Albert Edelfelt’s life for several years in Paris and served as his muse for numerous compositions in the "Parisian" style in the early 1880s. Sold in a frame with gilded moldings.
This beautiful portrait was engraved by Daniel Charles Marie Mordant, born on December 21, 1853, in Quimper and died on January 16, 1914, in Paris.
He was an engraver, painter, and etcher.
He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and later under Léon Gaucherel, Paul Edmé le Rat, Charles Albert Waltner, and the painter Carolus Duran.
From 1882 to 1889, he exhibited etchings at the Salon des Artistes Français, and from 1890 to 1914 at the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts.
In 1900, during the World’s Fair, he received the gold medal in the engraving section.
Albert Edelfelt was born on July 21, 1854;
he was one of the first Finnish artists to study in Paris.
He entered Jean Léon Gérôme’s studio in 1874.
He began as a history painter but turned to naturalism starting in 1880.
He quickly achieved great success with his scenes of Finnish everyday life, and later with his portraits.
His career reached its peak with the various portraits of Louis Pasteur that he exhibited in 1886, which brought him international renown.
In 1891, he returned to settle in Finland; the end of his career was marked by patriotic works.
