Prosper Saint-Germain (1805–1875)
French draftsman, painter, and engraver, Prosper Saint-Germain had close ties to Brittany, where he lived in Morlaix during the 1830s. A friend of the writer Émile Souvestre, he illustrated several of Souvestre’s works and specialized in depicting Breton landscapes, costumes, and scenes of daily life. His lithographs, published in numerous albums and magazines, played a major role in popularizing the picturesque image of Brittany in the 19th century. Appointed professor of drawing at the Naval Academy in Brest in 1851, he left behind an abundant body of graphic work, now preserved notably at the Breton Departmental Museum in Quimper and the Jacobins Museum in Morlaix.
