Portrait Of A Court Gentleman – French School, C. 1590–1600

A very beautiful and rare portrait of a young court gentleman, oil on canvas, painted in France in the late 16th century, circa 1590–1600.

The subject is depicted in a half-length portrait, dressed in a sumptuous black suit embellished with gold trim and large panels of red brocade. The spectacular lace ruff, painted with remarkable precision, is one of the most captivating elements of the work and attests to the refinement of aristocratic fashion during the late reign of Henry III and the early years of Henry IV.

The attention to detail in the face, the fabrics, the embroidery, and especially the lace places this portrait within the circle of French court painters of the late 16th century, in the artistic milieu of the Quesnels and Dumonstiers, though it has not yet been definitively attributed to any specific artist.

The canvas was previously relined, likely in the 18th century, and has been remounted on a sturdy antique chestnut wood stretcher.

The painting is set in an antique carved and gilded wooden frame, likely from the 18th century, probably dating from the same period as the re-lining.

A very beautiful decorative and historical piece, featuring a figure who clearly belongs to an aristocratic or courtly circle.
