Orientalist Bronze Sculpture “the African Warrior” By Clément Léopold Steiner (1853–1899), 19th Century
An elegant bronze sculpture with a brown patina depicting a young African warrior standing, clad in richly draped clothing and holding a finely chiseled curved saber. The quality of the modeling, the facial expression, and the attention to detail attest to the artist’s talent.
The work is signed “L. Steiner” for Clément Léopold Steiner (1853–1899), a French sculptor of the late 19th century. A student at the École des Beaux-Arts, he exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français and received several awards. His name remains particularly associated with the prestigious Alexandre III Bridge in Paris, where he created the monumental group *La Renommée de la Guerre* (The Fame of War), unveiled on the occasion of the 1900 World’s Fair.
The reverse of the bronze bears a stamp reading “Bronze garanti au titre – Déposé” (Guaranteed bronze—Registered) as well as an edition number, a hallmark of high-quality French bronzes from this period.
