This oil painting on canvas depicts Vespasian, oneof the eleven portraits of the Caesars painted by Tizianio Vecellio forDuke Federico II Gonzaga between 1538 and 1549—paintings that were destroyed inMadrid during a fire. Campi had copied the Caesars, using thedrawings as models, and later, around 1580, he created one or perhaps moreseries of twelve paintings, adding Domitian. This portrait comesfrom a collection in Mantua.
