Juan Pantoja de la Cruz, a native of Valladolid, was a Spanish court painter who studied under his master Alonso Sánchez Coello, painter to Kings Philip II and Philip III.
He took over his master’s studio and remained a prominent portraitist attached to the royal family in Valladolid, Burgos, Lerma, and El Escorial. He also excelled in religious and animal subjects.
We present a large full-length portrait of a young lady-in-waiting dressed in a marvelous gown embroidered with gold thread in shades of orange and adorned with jewelry fit for a queen. Her beautiful face, with its lively gaze, is adorned with a finely crafted lace ruff that signifies her social rank.
Her exquisitely delicate hands hold a laurel wreath, a symbol of power, knowledge, and peace.
