A French painter from Puy-de-Dôme, Victor VINCELET was born into a family of food merchants. He moved to Paris to study painting under Antoine Vollon, a Lyon-based painter specializing in still lifes, and Didier Alphonse L’Huillier.

Despite his relatively short life, he exhibited at the Salon and enjoyed great success among many art lovers and collectors of floral paintings.

Thepainter presents us with a large floral composition; magnificent peonies and wallflowers are arranged in a porcelain planter adorned with gilded bronze, which was very fashionable in the 19th century under Napoleon III.

The brightest hues contrast with the whiteness of the peonies, all of which illuminate the painting’s bronze-hued background.
Another charming little bouquet of roses in a crystal vase also brightens this large still life.
