Large Overdoor Panel Decorated With Flowers And Fruit—18th-century Piedmontese School.
Large oil-on-canvas overdoorpiece depicting a bouquet of flowers and fruit arranged around a vase, a work from the 18th-century Piedmontese school.
The canvas features a scalloped shape at the top and bottom, while the sides are straight. This shape, echoed by the stretcher frame, indicates its original purpose: the painting was designed to be set within wood paneling, likely above a door.
The composition is organized around a large baluster vase in coppery tones, resting on an entablature and slightly off-center to the right. The browns and ochres, accented with luminous highlights on the body and moldings, give it a metallic appearance.
The vase holds a bouquet of red, white, blue, and pink flowers, intertwined with foliage that spreads widely to the left and gradually blends into the dark background. Several stems hang down in front of the vase’s body, while flowers arranged on the entablature and in the lower section extend the composition.
To the right of the vase are two peaches and a cluster of grapes hanging over the edge of the entablature.
The pictorial treatment relies on the contrast between the brown-green background—in which part of the foliage remains in shadow—and the illuminated flowers, painted with touches of color and highlights.
With its scalloped format, its intended use in a wood paneling arrangement, the use of a dark background, and the composition combining a large vase with metallic tones, flowers and fruits on an entablature, this painting can be compared to the grand floral decorations created in Piedmont during the third quarter of the 18th century.
This stylistic vocabulary is particularly evident in the work of Michele Antonio Rapous (1733–1819), a flower painter active in Turin who created decorative works for Piedmontese residences, as well as in the overdoor panels attributed to Bartolomeo Brambilla. Several compositions preserved or documented in Turin and at the Palazzina di caccia di Stupinigi feature this same combination of large vases, bouquets of flowers, fruit, and architectural elements.
These parallels allow us to place our painting within the context of 18th-century Piedmontese decorative painting, though they do not permit attribution to a specific artist.
The canvas is mounted on an old wooden stretcher that follows its scalloped outline. The reverse side shows several small, older restorations as well as two remnants of red wax seals, likely related to a former provenance or collection.
The painting has been recently restored.
