French Glazed Terracotta Plaque Depicting Grape Harvesters—in The Style Of Ludovic Ollivier

Decorative terracotta plaque, handmade and glazed, depicting two stylized grape pickers carrying large baskets filled with grapes. The composition is complemented by grape clusters, leaves, and elegant vine shoots incised into the clay.

The front is covered with a warm brown glaze that beautifully highlights the relief and the hand-modeled details. The reverse side is flat, unglazed, and bears no markings.

The powerful, slightly naive modeling, along with the elongated silhouettes, are characteristic of French ceramics from the 1950s and 1960s. Given its subject matter, material, and period, this plaque can be compared to the terracotta bas-reliefs by the Franco-Catalan sculptor Ludovic Ollivier, particularly a comparable work depicting grape-pickers and signed “L.O. 50.”

However, this plaque bears no clearly legible signature and is therefore not presented as a work by Ludovic Ollivier. It is likely a French workshop piece dating from the same postwar period.

The slightly irregular edges, the modeled relief, and the incised details highlight its handcrafted nature. Since the back has no mounting mechanism, the plaque may originally have been placed in a wooden frame or mounted on a backing.
