Solid Silver Vinaigrette Box And Perfume Bottle, Barrel-shaped, 1871, S. Mordan London
Artist: Sampson Mordon & Co.
A charming barrel-shaped dressing and pillbox. It opens from both ends and has an integrated perfume holder on top. A remarkable design! Made of solid silver by Sampson Mordan & Co., London. Rich in hallmarks, here's a quick overview: on both ends of the barrel (which open), there are three hallmarks on each side: SM (for S. Mordan), the lion hallmark for 925 sterling silver, and the Q for the year 1871. Inside the bottle, you'll find the name S. Mordan & Co. and the word "London" in full. On the rim of the barrel are five silver hallmarks: from left to right: SM (upside down), the lion hallmark, the panther hallmark for London, the Q, and the Queen Victoria hallmark. Inside the dressing bottle lid, there are three hallmarks. SM, the Lion hallmark, and the letter Q. Please note the high quality of the vermeil (gold plating) on the inside of both ends. In good condition despite a few imperfections: a small mark on the top of the bottle and another, very discreet, on the side.
