Claude Thienon (1772–1848), Moreau, Lively Landscape, Italy: Tivoli, Rome; Flower; Signed Watercolor

A beautiful, romantic 19th-century watercolor depicting a lively Italian landscape: flower sellers stroll along the road to Tivoli in the Roman countryside. The artist has depicted this scene against a backdrop of countryside, a fortified village, and lush vegetation. This watercolor is signed in the lower right corner: Claude THIENON, a French painter, draftsman, and lithographer who was a student of Louis-Gabriel MOREAU (1740–1806). A cousin of the painter Jean-Baptiste ISABEY, he became the official draftsman to the King of Holland in 1806 and was later appointed director of the Dutch royal scholarship students in Rome. It was during this stay that he created this beautiful watercolor, bathed in lovely light.
Although slightly faded, its perspectives are nonetheless particularly well-executed, with its background and small village. It features a more recent mat and a superb period gilded frame with rounded corners, which gives it a very harmonious appearance. Frame dimensions: 24 x 30 cm
