Orientalist Drawing Of Ruins, 19th Century

Pencil drawing on paper depicting the ruins of a monument adorned with Arabic inscriptions.
Signed and dated in the lower right corner "A. Roux 1847".

Dimensions of the drawing without frame: 13x18 cm.

This could be a drawing by the painter and illustrator Mathieu Antoine Roux, born in 1799 and died in 1872. The Roux dynasty was a famous family from Marseille, many of whose members were marine painters and hydrographers. Their presence in Marseille is documented as early as 1708.
Another Orientalist painter could also have created this drawing, which depicts ruins likely from Egypt or Algeria. The monument depicted could not be identified. The format and style of the drawing suggest that it was created on location, perhaps from a sketchbook.

Drawing presented in a gilded frame (later frame).
