Achille Fouquier (1817-1895?) I “In the shade of the tall pines” pen drawing and sepia wash on light pencil line 13.5 X 20.7 cm. Under huge pines on the banks of the river which crosses the city and on which feluccas cross, men in burnous shelter from the heat of the sun to discuss. A tireless traveller, Achille Fouquier brought back from his many travels sketches, anecdotes, observations collected in several books that were published. Whether from the Basque Country (he was mayor of Saint-Jean-de-Luz), Italy, Greece, the Balkans or the Middle East, his drawings taken from life bear witness to the history of these regions.
