Large chiseled bronze incense burner (Koro) — Japan, Meiji period (1868–1912)
A spectacular, ovoid-shaped tripod incense burner made of patinated bronze, featuring rich chiseled decoration in high relief that showcases the full mastery of Japanese bronze artisans of the Meiji era.
The body of the piece is divided into several horizontal registers, each executed with extreme finesse:
The upper section is adorned with a frieze of Greek motifs beneath the rim, surmounting a drapery animated by serpent/dragon (ryū) masks and traditional pendants set against a finely guilloché background.
The central band features floral motifs in relief (peonies) set against a geometric latticework pattern (sayagata / claustra).
The lower section is adorned with circular medallions chiseled in reserve depicting mythological creatures, resting on three sturdy, archaic-inspired feet.
The side handles, cast in the round, take the form of mythical birds (Hō-ō / phoenix) with outstretched wings, forming elegant yet powerful grips.
Material: Bronze with a chocolate-brown patina.
Period: Japan, Meiji era (late 19th century).
Condition: Very good condition, superb original patina with slight signs of wear from age.
