Description of the Work

A charming and rare oil on panel by the French Post-Impressionist painter Charles Chardar, depicting a picturesque and sun-drenched scene of daily life on the island of Martinique.

The composition opens onto a peaceful watering hole bordered by lush tropical vegetation and the slender trunks of curved coconut palms. On the elevated bank, behind a traditional dwelling, an intimate scene comes to life with islanders gathered near a line of white laundry drying in the shade of the trees.

The artist brilliantly captures the vibrant, warm light of the tropics. Her impressionistic brushwork—fragmented and rich in texture—breathes life into the reflections on the water as well as the interplay of light and shadow filtering through the tropical foliage. The color palette masterfully features shades of deep green, warm ochres, and luminous highlights.
