Still Life with Eggplants and a Jug – Charles CHARDAR (1885–1969)

Artist: Charles CHARDAR (1885–1969), signed lower left

Period: Early 20th century (1950)

Medium: Oil on canvas

Condition: Good overall condition, looks remarkable in its period frame.

A superb and generous still life by the French painter Charles Chardar (1885–1969).

The composition, particularly balanced and warm, features in the foreground a white drape upon which rest two eggplants in deep purplish hues, surrounded by gleaming apples, clusters of black grapes, and a clear water glass. In the background stand out an imposing yellow-glazed terracotta jug with a top handle, a straw-wrapped glass carafe, and a carved glass jar.

The brushwork is bold, generous, and structured, demonstrating perfect mastery of the interplay of light, the transparency of the glass, and the reflections on the ceramic. The warm hues of ochre and red contrast elegantly with the cool tones of the glass and the eggplants.

The work is signed and dated in the lower left corner: “CHARDAR.” This piece dates from the period when the artist was living in Martinique (see reverse). It is sold framed in its original frame with gilded and patinated moldings.
