This large and lavish still life is an iconic work by the painter Charles Chardar.
Painted with a rich and generous impasto in the Post-Impressionist style, the composition depicts a veritable rustic and sumptuous feast laid out on a pleated white tablecloth:
- In the foreground, a crispy baguette sits next to a tray holding a cut of meat or a topped slice of bread, surrounded by colorful peppers, artichokes, onions, and fruit.
- In the background, an imposing head of cauliflower, leeks, and a large overturned wicker basket frame the scene, accompanied by two bottles of wine and a fruit bowl filled with oranges and apples.
- The sea-green tiled background lends a lovely freshness and luminous depth to the entire composition.
The color palette is vibrant, blending ochres, vivid reds, soft greens, and golden hues in a warm light.
