Pair Of Academic Male Nudes – Life Drawing, Circa 1900

A rare and remarkable pair of academic studies of the male nude, in charcoal and pencil on paper, attributed to Malcolm Osborne (1880–1963), the renowned British engraver and future professor at the Royal College of Art in London.

These two early drawings depict a live model, one seated in an elegant pose, the other standing with an arm raised. They already demonstrate a remarkable mastery of anatomy, form, and the interplay of light and shadow.

The old school label preserved on the back is a particularly interesting detail: it reads “Osborne” and “Age 19,” along with registration numbers. An old annotation also reads “Life Drawing” and 1900. These details correspond to Malcolm Osborne, born in 1880 and then an art student, before he entered the Royal College of Art.

Malcolm Osborne would later become a Royal Academician (RA) and one of the leading figures in British printmaking, succeeding Sir Frank Short as head of the printmaking school at the Royal College of Art.

A beautiful pair of English academic drawings from around 1900, particularly interesting for their high quality of execution and their original labels, which link them to Malcolm Osborne’s formative years.
