Léon Mousquet – Large Portrait Of A Dandy, Bordeaux, 1841

Important full-length portrait of a man, oil on canvas, signed “L. Mousquet” and dated 1841 in the lower right corner.

The work depicts an elegant gentleman from the first half of the 19th century, dressed in a black coat and a loose-fitting cape, standing before a balustrade overlooking a vast landscape under a twilight sky.

The pose, both natural and confident, as well as the particularly meticulous rendering of the face and hands, attest to the portraiture skills of Léon Mousquet, a 19th-century painter from Bordeaux.

Highly decorative due to its large dimensions, the painting is set in an imposing wooden and gilded stucco frame with rich ornamentation featuring rocaille motifs, shells, and foliage, which fully contributes to the spectacular character of the piece as a whole.

Condition: The canvas exhibits a network of craquelure consistent with its age, as well as two small impacts requiring spot restoration. These imperfections are minor given the work’s substantial size. The frame also shows signs of wear and minor damage typical of its age.
