Large Provençal Console Table Made Of Carved And Gilded Wood
An elegant and imposing wall-mounted console table made of carved and gilded wood, from the Louis XV period, likely a Provençal piece from the mid-18th century.
With a dynamic form, it features a wide, scalloped band adorned with an engraved latticework pattern punctuated by dots and centered by a large carved rocaille motif. The sides are accented with bold scallops and foliated scrollwork.
It rests on two strongly arched legs, designed with curves and counter-curves and joined by a sinuous crossbar centered on a large carved scallop. The vigor of the carving, the large scrolls, the shells, and the highly accentuated movement of the base are characteristic of the Rocaille style of the Louis XV period.
The piece retains its beautiful original gilding, which shows wear, touch-ups, and imperfections consistent with its age, revealing the underlying preparation and wood in places, which gives it a particularly decorative patina.
