Joseph FILMONT (1863–1917) – Bulldog, Caen
A beautiful terracotta animal sculpture depicting a reclining English bulldog, created by Joseph Filmont (1863–1917), a ceramist in Caen who founded a major Normandy ceramics and pottery factory in the late 19th century. Filmont also established a production facility in Bavent and created numerous decorative animal figures.
The bulldog is particularly well-executed, with its powerful and expressive form, its attentive gaze, and the very lifelike treatment of the material. The sculpture bears the incised signature “J. Filmont – Caen” on the underside of the base.
