Rare Empire-period Secretary Desk In Flamed Cuban Mahogany With Columns Featuring Gilded Bronze Swans

An elegant and imposing Empire-period drop-leaf secretary desk, made of veneer—known as “Cuban mahogany”—topped with a slab of black Belgian marble.

The front features remarkable veneer work, carefully selected and arranged in a mirror pattern, highlighting the deep iridescence and spectacular grain patterns of the flamed mahogany.

The secretary desk is flanked by two freestanding columns with constricted shafts, distinguished by their particularly elegant silhouette. They are embellished with extensive ornamentation of finely chiseled and gilded bronze, including richly carved bases and capitals.

The upper portions of the columns are adorned with capital-shaped finials topped by swans, set within a floral motif. This swan motif, particularly popular during the Empire period, fully contributes to the piece’s refined and monumental character.
