Empire-style Psyche In Mahogany And Gilded Bronze – Early 19th Century
An elegant Empire-style dressing table, crafted from mahogany and mahogany veneer, richly adorned with gilded bronze fittings.
The large, rectangular mirror with a semicircular top is set within a mahogany frame. The upper section features a remarkable frieze of gilded bronze foliage, arranged symmetrically and centered around a rosette.
The mirror, which tilts on its axis, is held between two freestanding mahogany columns, adorned with gilded bronze rings and capitals. Each column is surmounted by a large antique-style urn in finely chased gilded bronze, decorated with friezes and geometric motifs.
The piece rests on an elegant base with four saber-shaped arched legs, joined by a cylindrical mahogany crossbar. The legs are fitted with bronze glides on casters, allowing the Psyche to be moved easily.
The back retains its original wooden protective panel.
A truly beautiful piece, notable for its proportions, the quality of its mahogany, and above all the richness of its gilded bronze ornamentation—characteristic of the neoclassical taste of the Empire period.
