"Charles Jouas Menu Japonism"
Menu drawn for November 3, 1888 in the style of Hokusai's Japanese drawings. We see two Japanese people preparing a dish and the other serving, holding a bottle in one hand and a tray with a glass in the other. On the right are indicated the different dishes making up the meal. The drawing executed in pen and Indian ink is signed lower right by Charles Jouas. It is framed in a molded and silvered wooden frame from the end of the 19th century and measures 15x6.8 cm without this frame. Charles Jouas (1866-1942) studied painting in the studios of Georges Clairin, Isidore Pils and Henri Regnault. After beginning his career as a theatrical set painter, notably in the Tours theater, he decided to concentrate on the practice of drawing and became one of the main suppliers of drawings for literature.
