Pair Of Figurative Inkwells By Edmé Samson Depicting Chinese Boy Singers, Circa 1850–1860

A rare pair of figurative inkwells made of French hard-paste porcelain, produced by Edmé Samson & Co. in Paris around 1850–1860, based on 18th-century models by Johann Joachim Kändler.

The two figures depict seated Chinese boy singers, each holding an open songbook whose borders are richly embellished with burnished gold. The hollow body of each figure serves as the ink reservoir, while the removable porcelain head acts as the original stopper.

The figures are finely hand-painted with polychrome enamels featuring floral motifs. The costumes and wide pleated ruffles are embellished with extensive gilding and a delicate geometric pattern.

Beneath each inkwell, the unglazed base bears a recessed capital letter “S,” a documented mark of Edmé Samson & Co. This famous Parisian manufacturer was renowned for its exceptionally high-quality reproductions of antique European porcelain, whose value has continued to rise on the international antiques market.

Condition:
First inkwell: the porcelain body and removable cap are in excellent original condition. The collar located immediately below the cap shows areas of repainting on both sides.
Second inkwell: excellent original condition, with no signs of restoration, repair, or repainting. Both pieces have been examined under UV light. Both original removable stopper heads are present. The polychrome enamels remain particularly vivid, with slight wear to the gilding consistent with the piece’s age.
