Edmé Samson & Cie Paris Armorial Porcelain Plates, C.1890

Artist: Edme Samson

Produced in Paris around 1890, this pair of armorial porcelain plates exemplifies the high-quality revival wares for which Edmé Samson became internationally renowned. Inspired by eighteenth-century Chinese Export porcelain, the plates combine famille rose enamels, raised white relief ornament and delicate gilding.

The heraldic decoration centres on an azure shield with a golden lion, supported by a wolf and lion, beneath a crest with an arm holding an arrow. A pink ribbon bears the motto FORTIS IN BELLO. The arms are most likely associated with the Cantillon family of Ballyheigue.

The reverse bears Samson's characteristic pseudo-Chinese mark. Originally produced as replacement pieces for historic services, Samson porcelain is now widely collected and regularly encountered in major international auction catalogues.

A refined and highly decorative pair representing one of the most successful French interpretations of Chinese Export porcelain.
