Impressionist Vase From The Montigny-sur-loing Pottery, 19th Century

Artist: Eugène Shopin
Vase from the Montigny-sur-Loing Pottery, second half of the 19th century.
On the reverse side, "M.S.L" is hand-painted—standing for Montigny-sur-Loing—followed by a recessed cartouche reading: "E.S / M.S.L 26 422 + B," and then
"ES" for Eugène Schopin, the number 420 corresponds to the form, and the painted “B” corresponds to the painter
Eugène Schopin founded the factory in September 1872 in Montigny-sur-Loing (77) near the Barbizon School.  The decoration, consisting of thick colored paste applied with a brush in relief—almost Impressionist in style—on a very dark, nuanced black/green background is typical of the Japonist taste of the era • large, impasto roses, painted freely with drips of enamel; “Impressionist decoration, painted with anemone slip” or “decoration painted with flower slip”
