A pair of glazed ceramic vases made by Jean Massier in the early 20th century. Their slender forms with undulating necks and side handles are fully in keeping with the Art Nouveau aesthetic. The painted floral decoration features polychrome flowers rendered in a naturalistic style, contrasting with a gradient background of dark, bluish hues.
The glazes display the depth and blending effects characteristic of Vallauris pottery from this period. Jean Massier (1877–1937) was one of the leading figures of the Massier dynasty in Vallauris. He contributed to the revival of artistic ceramics in the South of France at the turn of the 20th century, following the Art Nouveau movement, by developing free-flowing forms and floral decorations inspired by nature. The vases are signed on the base. Sold as a pair.
