"Zoomorphic Decoration - J. Massier - Earthenware - France - 19th Century "
A rare and spectacular decorative earthenware object depicting a fantastical fish, richly sculpted with particularly intricate details: finely modeled scales, outstretched fins, scrolls, and stylized plant motifs in the pure Art Nouveau style. This piece is fully in keeping with the naturalistic and sculptural production of Jérôme Massier, renowned for his powerfully decorative zoomorphic creations at the end of the 19th century. The elongated shape and the cavity at the top suggest a pen holder, trinket dish, or decorative utilitarian table object, typical of the 1900 aesthetic. The quality of the modeling, the balance of volumes, and the richness of the decoration testify to the expertise of the Massier workshop in Golfe-Juan. On the reverse, a fragment of an old label bearing the inscription “…me Massier” confirms workshop production. Period: late 19th – early 20th century, circa 1895–1910, Golfe-Juan, Alpes-Maritimes. Condition: very good overall condition. Only 2 or 3 very minor chips from use, discreet and without aesthetic impact. No restoration.
