This is a truly beautiful composition by Charles Mérangel, who here chose to paint a Cubist still life featuring a candlestick, a glass, a pipe, and other objects arranged on a table, circa 1950–1955. He employs his usual technique by stylizing the subject with straight and diagonal lines that trace the contours of the objects to form geometric patterns, and then applies his colors—here in monochromatic shades of blue, gray, and beige. 

Charles Merangel was born in Le Puy-en-Velay in 1908. After attending the École des Beaux-Arts and working in various studios, he began exhibiting both in Paris and in the provinces (Vézelay, etc.). He rubbed shoulders with and drew inspiration from painters such as Albert Gleizes, Robert Pouyaud, and Jean-Claude Libert, and he then moved toward a very personal style of Cubism, even going so far as to create abstract compositions. 
Alongside his work as a painter, Charles Mérangel was active on film sets as a production designer and set decorator. He notably worked for Alain Resnais, Louis Malle, Claude Chabrol, Lellouche...He also worked alongside Fernandel. He exhibited at numerous Parisian art fairs and galleries, including the Galerie Billietin Paris, from March 12 to 25, 1937, alongside Pignon
Ïan Larue is his granddaughter. 
During his career, he produced approximately 400 canvases and 400 gouaches at most, so his works are quite rare on the market today
