The painting depicts a characteristic architectural capriccio with ruins, animated by numerous figures in popular costume. At the centre of the composition stands a ruined arch supporting the remains of a bridge, surmounted by a roofless brick tower eroded by time. To the right, a scenic arrangement of buildings and trees unfolds, while in the foreground groups of peasants, wayfarers and female figures in traditional dress enliven the scene with lively gestures, in keeping with the taste typical of eighteenth-century Piedmontese genre painting. The pictorial handling, executed with fluid brushwork and a warm palette, is in keeping with the tradition of capricci with ruins and figures widespread in Northern Italy during the eighteenth century.
