Venetian Sculptor (18th Century) - Three Figures Of Beggars.

Artist: Sculpteur Vénitien (xviiie Siècle)

Venetian sculptor (18th century) - Three figures of beggars.

Large: 14 x 7 x h 30 cm. Small: 8 x 4 x h 22 cm.

Full figures in carved, lacquered, and painted wood.

A group of three figures depicting pitocchi (itinerant beggars) according to a subject of great popularity in Venetian decorative sculpture of the 18th century. The largest figure carries a swaddled infant in its arms, while the two smaller figures each hold a sack, consistent with the iconographic tradition of popular petitioners. The figures are shown in curved, dynamic postures, wearing ragged garments and pointed hats characteristic of this type. The expressive, caricatural rendering of the faces reveals a skilled hand in the physiognomic characterization typical of this sculptural genre, widespread in Venetian craft production and across the Terraferma.

Condition report: Generally good state of preservation. Polychromy with diffuse losses and wear to the lacquer consistent with age.
