"saint Michael Slaying The Dragon," Italy, 18th Century
Polychrome wood sculpture with silver leaf, depicting the Archangel Saint Michael vanquishing evil, personified here as a dragon.
Michael is one of the seven major archangels (along with Gabriel and Raphael, among others) in the Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam). He is called an archangel—or chief angel—in the Bible. His name comes from the Hebrew Mîkhâ'êl, and he is referred to as the “designated protector of the Hebrew people” (Daniel 10:21; 12:1).
As the leader of the heavenly host of the angels of Good, he is primarily depicted at the end of time, vanquishing evil, often holding the scales used to weigh souls, as the judge and guide of souls’ salvation to Hell or Heaven(a symbolic allegory of the victory of Good over Evil).
He is the patron saint of Normandy, France, Germany, Belgium, and, since 2017, the Vatican.
Resinous wood?, Italy. 18th century.
Height: 0.91 at the lance.
Parts of the polychrome paint are missing.
