Carved Wood Lectern - Eagle. Italy, 19th Century.
Carved wood lectern - Eagle. Italy, 19th century.
88 x 55 x h 153 cm.
A lectern entirely in carved wood, composed of a circular base on three scroll feet, a turned shaft with a spherical finial, and a figure of an eagle with spread wings. The eagle, carefully detailed in its plumage, is rendered in the traditional heraldic pose with the head turned to three quarters; the sphere beneath its talons recalls the imperial and ecclesiastical iconography long associated with this type of liturgical or library object. The quality of the carving, particularly evident in the feathers and anatomical details, points to a skilled Italian workshop of the 19th century.
