The painting depicts the biblical episode of Joseph imprisoned in Egypt (Genesis 39-40). The scene takes place within an austere prison setting, defined by thick exposed stone walls, blind arched openings and barred windows. At the centre of the composition, a large grated opening reveals the figure of young Joseph, portrayed half-length behind the bars, the sole protagonist of the scene. The absence of other figures heightens the sense of isolation and confinement. The work is executed entirely in blue monochrome, a camaïeu technique common in eighteenth-century decorative painting, lending the scene a suspended, nocturnal atmosphere.
