Large Globe By Charles Perigot (1828–1885)

Our educational globe wascompiled by Charles Périgot, a history and geography teacherat Lycée St. Louis, drawn by A.L.P. Mouraux—InstitutGéographique de Paris— published in Paris by Ch. Delagrave,located at 15 rue Soufflot, specializing in school supplies.

Charles Périgot, born on January 22,1828, in Rouen and died on June 17, 1885, in Paris, was a French geographer andhistorian. Admitted in 1850 to the École NormaleSupérieure and in 1857 to the Agrégation des Lettres, Périgot initially taughthistory and geography in Alençon and Douai.
In1864, he was appointed to the Lycée Saint-Louis, and later to the Écoledes hautes études commerciales.
He is the author of classicgeography textbooks and atlases that were of great serviceto the academic world of his time. He is best known for his *Atlasgénéral de géographie physique et politique ancienne, du Moyen Âgeet moderne* (General Atlas of Physical and Political Geography: Ancient, Medieval,and Modern), Paris, F. Tandou, 1865.

The famous publishing house CharlesDelagrave was founded by him in 1865; it remains theleading publisher of the late 19th century, specializing ineducational globes and textbooks (for schools anduniversities).

Alp. Mouraux was a19th-century French illustrator and cartographer, known for his workon terrestrial and celestial globes as well asgeographic maps.

These educational globes incorporate thegeographical knowledge of the time, sometimes including the routeof the Suez Canal, which opened in 1869. Since this route is not visible onour globe, we can therefore date its creation to before 1869.
