Lace-maker's Box - Box Of Love – Small Carved Lace-maker's Box – Folk Art
Late 19th – early 20th century
Private collection in Montlet, Haute-Loire, Auvergne
A charming little lace-maker’s box carved from softwood, part of the Auvergne folk art tradition and, more specifically, among the objects made for the personal use of lace-makers.
This miniature box features a particularly intricate geometric design, entirely carved with a knife. The lid is adorned with rosettes and stylized petals, framed by a triangular frieze. The various sides feature a rich repertoire of swirling rosettes, star-shaped motifs, and plant branches.
This decorative vocabulary, both simple and highly graphic, is characteristic of folk art from the Haute-Loire region, an area deeply rooted in the tradition of bobbin lace-making.
The box retains a beautiful antique patina, highlighting the depth and vitality of its carved decoration.
