Reliquary - Bronze Heraldic Seal Matrix - Bishop - Ecclesiastical Seal

Mid-19ᵉ century

Europe (France or Italy)

Oval-shaped bronze seal matrix, pertaining to ecclesiastical heraldic productions of the XIXᵉ century.

The engraved surface features a central shield left blank, intended to receive or having received a personalization now absent. This is surmounted by a crown and accompanied by the characteristic attributes of the clergy: wide-brimmed ecclesiastical hat with cordelières and lateral tassels, arranged on either side of the shield. The whole is framed by stylized ornamental decoration, forming a balanced, hierarchical composition.

The engraving is clean and precise, executed in intaglio, with good contrast between background and relief, ensuring excellent legibility in print. The treatment of the details - cordelières, tassels, foliage and frames - testifies to meticulous workmanship, probably intended for administrative or personal use related to an ecclesiastical function.

This type of die was used to form the impression in hot wax, notably for reliquary seals, enabling sacred contents to be sealed and authenticated. These impressions, often affixed to threads or strips, guaranteed the integrity of the reliquary and its ecclesiastical authority.

The reverse is flat, with no inscription or mounting, indicating a stand-alone die, possibly intended to be mounted or used by hand.

The bronze patina is old, with brown and slightly oxidized nuances, consistent with age. A few traces of use and micro-scratches are visible, without altering the engraving.

This type of die was used to seal official documents, correspondence or deeds, and participates fully in the visual and symbolic identity of its holder.

Condition : Good overall condition. Wear from use, homogeneous old patina, engraving well preserved and perfectly legible.
