Artifact – Antiquity – Yellow Pottery Wheel-handled Jug – Archaeology
Period: 2nd – 1st century BC. Origin: Necropolis of La Catalane, Les Baux-de-Provence (Southern Gaul). Provenance: Brunet Collection (no. 69), acquired before 1973. Globular jug with a handle, made of wheel-thrown yellow ceramic, from the funerary offerings of the protohistoric necropolis of La Catalane. This example corresponds to no. 60 in the inventory published in the Revue archéologique de Narbonnaise (1973), figs. 31 and 32. The shape combines a broad body with a tall cylindrical neck ending in a thickened, ridged lip. The whole rests on a pronounced ring foot. The vertical, ribbon-like handle is incised with two longitudinal grooves and firmly joined under the lip and on the shoulder. Description: • Material: fairly hard, brownish-yellow, slightly pinkish clay. • Surface: no slip; Surface treatment identical to item no. 58 in the catalog. • Surface condition: the body shows two old areas of flaking, already noted in the publication. • Decoration: undecorated. • Handle: with two longitudinal grooves. • Technique: visible wheel-thrown form; local artisanal production from the late Iron Age. Use: This type of jug accompanied urns in cremation burials. It could contain liquids related to the funerary ritual, demonstrating the integration of wheel-thrown forms into southern indigenous practices on the eve of Romanization. Condition: intact (mentioned as such in the publication).
